Learning the Right Way on How to Test Your Car's Battery

In order to get an accurate reading on the strength of the battery in your vehicle, you only need to follow these steps and utilize a voltmeter.
  1. Before doing anything with the battery, turn off the car lights and the ignition.
  2. If you notice any signs of corrosion on the battery terminal, a wire brush is needed to ensure the contact to the voltmeter is solid.
  3. Be sure to place the red clamp of the voltmeter to the positive terminal of the car battery, then do the same with the black clamp going to the negative terminal on the battery.
  4. Read the voltmeter, the number will be above 12.4 if the battery is still in working order. If the number reads below 12.2, then it could fail and not hold a charge.
