Horsepower Is An Interesting Word

Horsepower is an interesting word. Taken literally, it can conger up images of rippling muscles on a massive steed, but what does it really mean? To understand that, we must examine its origins.

When James Watt wanted to sell more steam engines to the 18th-century public, he knew he had to relate their strength to something with which the people were already familiar. Since consumers at the time used horses for multiple purposes, including getting from one place to another and to power farming equipment, he used this animal as an example.

After observing ponies pulling carts loaded with coal at a local mine, he determined that one pony was capable of pulling 33 pounds per minute. This remains the measurement used to describe horsepower and is therefore what this term is all about.
